Tips for Cleaning Garden Decking and the Outdoor Area

We all love our outdoor area, whether it is mainly covered in patio, decking, or grass. Unfortunately, the winter and the bad weather that goes with it, means that come spring the decking area can often look the worse for wear.

The power of the elements takes its toll on the area outside, though fortunately a little elbow grease, along with some knowhow can really make the difference to the area.

Decking can really suffer from the weather, though with some cleaning and garden equipment, you can ensure it looks spick and span again. Clean decking looks a lot better and is also a lot safer.

Overtime residues left on decking can become slippery and so be quite dangerous meaning cleaning is a necessity. Of course as most decking is made of wood, it also needs an element of care to be taken.

Firstly, clear the area and make sure there's nothing in the way. There's nothing less conducive to timely cleaning than having to move objects to and fro. So, lift it all off, or get some help and lift it all off.

Now get a stiff brush and give the decking a good clean. This should remove anything that is in anyway loose on the decking. Follow this up with a hose down from a home pressure washer. Avoid using the industrial variety as it may damage the wood.

Next, mix up soda crystals with warm water and soda then just wet the deck and some more sprinkle the soda crystals all over it. Brush it off after a few minutes. Of course, you can get specific garden equipment for this and there are a number of chemical cleaners also available. If you do decide on using these chemicals, test them on a small area of the decking first, to ensure they won't cause any damage, or problems for your wood.

These chemical cleaners are often created specifically for decking and will kill off any algae, or other growths on the decking, while they also rejuvenate it. There may be variations for certain timbers - so be aware of that when purchasing them.

If you are in any confusion over what garden equipment to choose, consult the people at your local DIY store, or garden equipment sellers.

This procedure should be done twice a year to ensure your decking is kept in a safe and tidy condition all year round.
